The Beneteau Island Concept Case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSex and Samba\u201d or \u201cBlood and Sh*t\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two quotes (and if you can name the author of the second one, you have my respect!) to describe the reaction sparked by anything as innovative as it is divisive\u2014like the Beneteau Island Concept presented at the latest D\u00fcsseldorf Boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s break it down.<br>The French megagroup gathered data from over 1,000 boats across four years using its Seanapps system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without diving into the system details\u2014which deserve a separate analysis\u2014the point is that the behavior of boaters was meticulously monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did they find?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Mediterranean, 80% of the time spent outside the harbor, what people call \u201csailing,\u201d is actually spent at anchor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actual navigation covers an average distance of 16 miles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average speed is 8.5 knots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, you can almost hear the keyboard experts commenting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThis is a partial study.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBeneteau buyers aren\u2019t real sailors.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI sail at least 30 miles every time I leave the harbor,\u201d and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they\u2019re right, but Beneteau can show hard data. And opinions (anyone\u2019s opinions) are, by definition, debatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, they\u2019re about as useful for defining business strategies as a taxi driver or barber\u2019s commentary on resolving the Middle East crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if Beneteau introduces such a product, they know it addresses a real need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the boating world is one of the most static industries: think about how much it cost Bassani to revolutionize yacht design (and the related sailing experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the \u201csailors\u201d were against him, and now 90% of sailboats draw inspiration from what Wally started proposing in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(As a side note, among the major sailboats presented at the 2025 Boot, none featured classic flared bows\u2014except for a few replicas of traditional designs.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to the initial polarization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the data, much of the boating world views the \u201cisland boat\u201d concept the same way director Rokko Smithersons (aka Corrado Guzzanti) described Pulp Cinema (that\u2019s the second quote).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s the takeaway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two lessons here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>General<\/strong>: Whatever you do\u2014even if you have the numbers on your side and meet a market demand\u2014someone will call your product \u201cPulp Cinema.\u201d Ignore it and push forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sector-specific<\/strong>: If you want to innovate in boating, prepare for a lot of patience and determination because, at least in conversations, too many people will claim to know more than you do.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you think a couple of clarifying discussions could help you work better, email us at info@lliquida.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re here to lend a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cSex and Samba\u201d or \u201cBlood and Sh*t\u201d?
