Or so it seems. Shipyards, boat shows, accessory brands, and even marina networks are painting themselves green: electric engines, solar panels, recycled materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But beneath the eco-friendly paint, how much truth is there? And how much, instead, is pure greenwashing with a dockside view?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Green Boating: Evolution or Marketing Strategy?<\/strong> The pressure from environmental regulations, combined with the (true or alleged) sensitivity of some new boat owners, is accelerating the transition towards more sustainable recreational boating. Today we find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-electric outboards (which only work if you don&#8217;t need to plane for long)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low-impact anti-fouling paints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bio-based construction materials (resins derived from vegetable fibers, flax, cork)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Onboard systems managed by smart tech to reduce energy waste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All good, all green. But then you get on board and discover that to run the boat, the generator (which produces electricity via diesel) has to work 20 hours a day. That&#8217;s the paradox of sustainable boating. &#8220;It&#8217;s like saying: I cycle, but I have diesel in my basket.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Nautical Greenwashing: When Ecology is Just a Well-Made Brochure<\/strong> The risk is confusing communication with action. More and more companies sell &#8220;eco&#8221; just because the word &#8220;sustainable&#8221; is trending. Who Truly Believes: Virtuous Examples<\/strong> Fortunately, it&#8217;s not all smoke (and diesel). Some companies are acting consistently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>X Shore (Sweden):<\/strong> 100% electric boats, with silent propulsion and sustainable materials. They have developed their own charging system and are pushing for a true electric ecosystem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elvene (Finland):<\/strong> Self-sufficient solar-powered boats thanks to photovoltaic panels, requiring no maintenance. They have unlimited range, are silent, and very easy to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunreef Yachts Eco (Poland):<\/strong> Luxury catamarans integrating solar panels into the boat&#8217;s surface, high-efficiency batteries, and electric motors. Not just appearance, but investments in R&amp;D.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Candela Boats (Sweden):<\/strong> Full-electric hydrofoil powerboats, reducing consumption by up to 80%, zero emissions, planing without wake, and zero noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some ports are starting to integrate electric charging stations for boats, but we are still in the early stages. Others are installing stations that clearly show water and electricity consumption, to better manage usage and educate boaters about the use of precious resources. Just as companies and professionals are beginning to emerge to help nautical businesses obtain ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. But is Full Electric Really the Solution?<\/strong> It depends. Electric power at sea works if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you navigate at low speeds (e.g., lakes, tenders, excursions in protected bays)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you can easily recharge in port (and with energy from renewable sources)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you don&#8217;t have long-range or offshore cruising needs. Although the catamaran manufacturer Silent Yachts has a fleet of catamarans capable of crossing the Atlantic purely on solar energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, you risk doing the nautical equivalent of a scooter on the highway. For the future, we are also looking at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diesel\/electric hybrid (an interesting compromise, especially on catamarans)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydrogen (still too expensive and not widespread)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar-assisted sailing (where wind does the heavy lifting and electric power only supports maneuvers and onboard living)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Green Boating: How to Communicate (Well) Without Misleading Anyone<\/strong> If you&#8217;re a company in the sector and want to talk about sustainability, do it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Declare limits:<\/strong> Admitting a product is only &#8220;partially green&#8221; builds trust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speak technically, but accessibly:<\/strong> Avoid vague slogans like &#8220;eco-friendly&#8221; and explain with concrete data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Involve customers in the transition:<\/strong> &#8220;Are you willing to cruise at 6 knots to pollute less?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Measure real impact:<\/strong> Avoided emissions, saved materials, reduced consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To learn more about honest storytelling, we also recommend reading our article: \ud83d\udc49 Repent, the End is Nigh: Communication, Algorithms, and Truth<strong>6.
