Communication during uncertainty sells more than communication during growth

When the market collapses, almost everyone disappears.

Shipyards cut their social media presence, charter companies send emails packed with desperate discounts, and nautical influencers suddenly have nothing to say.

Silence is instinctive: if there are no buyers, why shout?

Like Vulvia’s gazelle on Rieducational Channel used to say when threatened by the lightning-fast cheetah: «why should I even run? I’ll just get tired…»

Too bad instinct, in cases like this, takes a massive blunder.

Because it is better to do the exact opposite.

Let me draw two opposite scenarios for you.

In the first one, the market is doing well.

The potential customer receives a hundred “buy a boat” messages from different operators.

It is noise.

They do not even hear it.

In the second one, the scenario is completely different.

There is a war close to home, stock markets are dropping, and fuel prices are going crazy.

The potential customer we mentioned earlier receives only three messages.

One is a desperate discount.

Another is the usual email addressed to the so-called high-spenders – meaning those people we assume are immune to market fluctuations.

The third is a smart article explaining why a boat still makes sense right now.

Which message convinces them to keep listening?

When the best customers take the stage

During instability, the nautical market splits in two: those who postpone out of fear and those who decide anyway because they have a real reason.

That second category? They are exactly the customers you want.

They buy for deep, personal motivations, preferring substance and concreteness over pure social visibility.

They buy because the boat resolves something real in their life – be it freedom, control, or a space where the world’s instability cannot reach.

They are strong customers, with solid decisions and a lower risk of second thoughts.

The hurdle for you selling is that these customers cannot build the narrative on their own.

The market is nervous, everything feels fragile, the cost of living is rising: how do you justify a luxury purchase to yourself (and to your wife, partner, or bank) when everything is uncertain?

You need someone to explain it to you.

Here is the thing: when the market is quiet, your “buy the boat” message competes with a hundred other messages.

When it is volatile, your message “here is why a boat makes sense right now” has no competitors.

The example that works

Groupe Beneteau understood this well.

After 2023, when demand began to slow down, destocking the commercial network – which had been intoxicated by the post-covid pace – became urgent.

In fact, several segments began to normalize.

The group did not choose to disappear.

It kept communicating: results, strategies, product development.

No desperate offers or discounts disguised as news.

The message was simple: look, we know what is happening in the market, we keep innovating, we have a vision.

Solidity, continuity, presence.

Exactly what a dealer, a partner, or a potential customer needs to hear when everything is creaking.

They kept a steady helm and, above all, maintained trust with those who truly matter: the commercial network, the partners, and the customers who were deciding whether to stay on board or look for stability elsewhere.

Oh, let’s be clear, communication during silence does not immediately fill the salespeople’s agendas.

It fills something more precious: the head of the person who is deciding.

In practice, you are buying the customer’s mindshare at a bargain price, because your competitors are silent.

And when the market moves again, you are already there.

The price of disappearing

On the contrary, those who disappear during volatility pay a real cost.

Not only do they lose the potential customers of that moment, even worse: they lose authority.

When the market stabilizes again, the customer remembers: this operator vanished when things got complicated.

They are not the first one I think of when I return to look.

And you do not need the material resources of a giant like Beneteau.

You just need clarity on what you have to do.

Because a well-aimed shot is more effective than a random flurry of gunfire.

You know how the story of David and Goliath ended, right?

Beneteau has to move an editorial battleship; a small nautical entrepreneur only needs a single honest letter, written by their own hand and sent to their database, to successfully prove they are alive, solid, and present at the helm.

More than the budget, it is the face that counts.

In the nautical industry, more than in other sectors, reputation has a long memory.

Those who communicate during chaos, not with discounts but with intelligence, become a benchmark.

Those who disappear, instead, simply become irrelevant.

The next time you hear someone say “the market is not ready”, ask yourself: ready for what, exactly?

Ready to hear the usual lies?

Or ready to hear something true?
